Shear shock formation in incompressible viscoelastic solids

چکیده
Experiments have shown that shear waves induced in brain tissue can develop into shock waves, thus providing a possible explanation of deep traumatic injuries. Here, we study the formation soft viscoelastic solids subject to an imposed velocity at their boundary. We consider plane shearing motion semi-infinite half-space, which corresponds spatially one-dimensional problem. Incompressible whose behaviour is described by Fung-Simo quasi-linear viscoelasticy theory (QLV) are considered, where elastic response either exponential or polynomial Mooney-Rivlin-Yeoh type. Waveform breaking occur blow-up acceleration leading one sufficient condition for shocks. A slow scale analysis based on small amplitude parameter yields damped Burgers-like equation, another condition. Numerical experiments performed using dedicated finite volume scheme show these estimates limited accuracy. Their validity restricted limit too, exact conditions known.

Shear Stresses in Shock-compressed Covalent Solids
Shear stresses are the driving forces for the creation of both point and extended defects in crystals subjected to high pressures and temperatures. Recently, we observed anomalous elastic materials response in shock-compressed silicon and diamond in the course of our MD simulations and were able to relate this phenomenon to non-monotonic dependence of shear stress on uniaxial compression of the...
متن کاملCrack propagation in viscoelastic solids.
We study crack propagation in a viscoelastic solid. Using simple arguments, we derive equations for the velocity dependence of the crack-tip radius, a (v) , and for the energy per unit area to propagate the crack, G (v) . For a viscoelastic modulus E (omega) which increases as omega(1-s) (0< s< 1) in the transition region between the rubbery region and the glassy region, we find that a (v) appr...
متن کاملShock Formation in a Multidimensional Viscoelastic Diffusive System
We examine a model for non-Fickian "sorption overshoot" behavior in diffusive polymer-penetrant systems. The equations of motion proposed by Cohen and White [SIAM J. Appl. Math., 51 (1991), pp. 472-483] are solved for two-dimensional problems using matched asymptotic expansions. The phenomenon of shock formation predicted by the model is examined and contrasted with similar behavior in classica...
متن کاملLubrication of soft viscoelastic solids
Lubrication flows appear in many applications in engineering, biophysics, and in nature. Separation of surfaces and minimisation of friction and wear is achieved when the lubrication fluid builds up a lift force. In this paper we analyse soft lubricated contacts by treating the solid walls as viscoelastic: soft materials are typically not purely elastic, but dissipate energy under dynamical loa...
متن کاملInterface waves in pre-stressed incompressible solids
We study incremental wave propagation for what is seemingly the simplest boundary value problem, namely that constitued by the plane interface of a semi-infinite solid. With a view to model loaded elastomers and soft tissues, we focus on incompressible solids, subjected to large homogeneous static deformations. The resulting strain-induced anisotropy complicates matters for the incremental boun...
